Girls' Trip

Here's our very first Girls' Only Trip this year which took place in sunny California. That means, no husbands, boyfriends, babies/children, dogs or pagers. This was our first but I hope not last reunion.

Our "reunion" memorialized in sand, which was soon erased by the ocean wave.

At the Santa Cruz beach. As Laurel said, the ocean waves and vista make one contemplative.

I can't help but dream of living in California one day, but hubby never fails to remind me of the inconvenient threats that come with paradise: earthquakes, forest fires, and tsunamis.

Shadow picture, Shoreh's idea.

With Laurel at Firshermen's Wharf. That's an eyeball flower to the left of me!

The awesome foursome, R to L: Joyce, Shoreh, Laurel, and Linda. We've known each other for 16 years!! My oldest and bestest friends.

B-day for 'Beautiful day'

So, got some lovely flowers from hubby on my birthday (roses and irises) but here are some other flowers that caught my attention:

The Poppy flower, the mother of opium and morphine.

Foxglove, or digitalis. Anyone's got a sick heart?

Best friends (born 2 days apart) since over half of our lives ago.
~
Thanks, Laurel, for visiting and taking me out to the Dallas Arboretum for our birthdays! I had a great time with you and the boys.

Here's at some friends' house all the way in Fort Worth on Saturday night.

The three of them all showed up wearing pink tees and khaki capris! What are the chances of that happening?!

Pictures (of wedding and Kitty)

There are few events more enjoyable than a wedding. I've regretted the several weddings we were unable to attend this past year due to school, weather, work, travel, graduation, etc. Here's one we were able to attend in Arkansas, James and Melinda's wedding last Saturday.

We are both very cheeky (full cheeks), no?

With the happy couple.

Here is Kitty enjoying a movie. . .it was "Because I Said So."

Borrrrrrrrrinnngg. . .that or I'm just an old cat who needs her sleep.

Ahh, this elective month is great . . .I'm actually getting paid to read EKGs with the cardiologists.

Mel and Omar's Wedding

Paul and I attended my school friends, Mel and Omar's wedding this weekend. Mel and Omar are a great couple. I have fond memories of celebrating birthdays, having get-togethers and pot-luck dinners and more recently, double dating with them. They are so down-to-earth and cheerful people, a couple of cool personalities and warm spirits. It was also great seeing a handful of classmates and friends that I haven't seen in many months.

Me with Mel and Omar (future pediatrician and family medicine doctor, in that order). They had Mariachi band in the background, so festive!

Robert and Lieu at the wedding, also future pediatrician and family doctor, respectively.

By the stroke of chance or perhaps something more divine, we found out that we are going to be in Tokyo at the same time as Robert and Lieu!! They are a couple of friends of mine from school and they are spending a couple of weeks traveling through Japan. We are arriving at Narita airport on the same day just 1 hour apart on different flights! Truth be told, I have been rather concerned about our mini 3-day trip in Tokyo ever since I found out that David (Paul's older bro) is not going to be there. We would have cancelled the stay in Tokyo if it weren't for the expensive ticket change fee. The whole point of going to Japan was to visit David and be under his wings while he orchestrated and guided our adventure in a foreign land. But duty calls, he has to be out of the country for work during our trip! So Japan became much more of an adventure than I bargained for! I started having visions of us getting lost amist the massive subway system in Tokyo. . .how do I exchange $$ to yen? What is the best way to get from Narita to Tokyo? What places should we visit?! Where are good places to eat without clearing out our wallet or risk poisoning by ill-prepared puffer fish ?? What can I say, I'm a worrier by nature. I had much research and planning to do. But then I found out Robert and Lieu are going to be there, too! We've vowed to stick together, for better or worse, in times of getting lost, in times of trying sushi. . .plus, we can take couples' pictures for each other!

B-School and the Beatitudes

We just received news of Paul’s older brother, David, getting accepted to the Wharton school of business. What great news! We are overjoyed for David. I know it’s been his dream and he worked really hard for it. I have never heard of Wharton until from an episode of “The Apprentice,” I learned that both Donald Trump and his beautiful daughter, Ivanka Trump graduated from Wharton.

The news got me thinking. How great is this country that everyone’s got a fair shot at their dreams. Take hubby’s family, there are no high-profile or wealthy connections; Paul and David are the first in the family to even get a college degree. David didn’t have a rich father or famous mother or connections to the elite, he only had his own hard work and well-earned accolades behind his belt and he got into the world’s best B-school. Only in America. I love this country. Of course David has got talent, he is fluent in three languages and a shiny career at Panasonic for the last several years to boot. Hubby will add that David’s good looks doesn’t hurt either. But no one can underestimate the simple foundation of his hard work.

Hubby jested, “we’ve got a doctor, an engineer, and businessman in the family, now all we need is a liar.”

“Say what?!” I said.

“Oh, I meant a lawyer.” Ha, ha, funny hubby, he didn’t even mean to make a joke, it was a genuine Freudian slip!

This got me thinking some more. I thought of the lesson that we just had last Saturday on the Beautitudes.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.”

The author, Philip Yancy, challenged us to think, in a world that rewards self-confidence, self-assertiveness, and success, where do these words of Jesus fit? I have been struggling with the answer ever since. Jesus also said, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.” It would seem the poor and the meek have a inherent advantage over the well-to-do spiritually. While I believe this is true because the poor, the prosecuted, and the meek are often desperate and desperation will turn us to God, but I don’t believe that it is wrong to be self-confident and successful in this world. It might be harder to have both, both practically and psychologically-speaking, but worldly success and godliness are NOT mutually exclusive. But when failure and crisis do come our way, as Christians, we can handle them with gratitude and even joy knowing that God has promised us great things in our troubled times.

So, this is my prayer for David for his future. I pray that no matter what status or money comes his way, he’ll always retain his core of goodness, integrity, and love for God. And this prayer applies to us, too. But for now, I’m just happy for David, happy that he’ll be back in the US once again. And happy, too, that hubby continues to have a close relationship with his one and only brother. That's more valuable than many things on earth, isn't it?

Sunday BBQ

How many ways are there to say barbecue?? Barbeque, BBQ, Bar-B-Q, they even call it Barbie in Australia! We were invited to one at our friends, KC and Juei's. They have two very cute Shih-Tzu dogs, Charlie and Cindy, who become the center of our attention and source of entertainment at the gathering! Aren't dogs great??

It got windy and bit chilly, so we came indoors.

Charlie, the lap-lover. It doesn't take much for this guy to jump on your lap!

Hmm, an outfit of my own making. Last year's gaucho pants, shoes:ballerina flats, and a matching headband b/c I didn't wash my hair today. Peek-a-boo Kitty.

Kitty doing the "catwalk." I think you're gorgeous, Kitty!

Eating Yee Sang and CNY

We celebrated Chinese New Year with friends at Adrian and LeeLee's house on Saturday night. It seems we've adopted a new tradition for CNY in the last few years, the tossing and eating of Yee Sang! Just what is Yee Sang? After enjoying this dish with our Malaysian friends for a few years now, I decided to find out!

It is basically a colorful salad made of shredded veggies and raw fish served with plum sauce dressing. Yee sang is "yusheng" in pinyin, or 鱼生 in Chinese. It literally means "raw fish," but "yu" can also mean "over abundance" or "excess" and "sheng" is also "birth." So the element of word play here provides the basis for eating raw fish salad in order to bring in good luck and prosperity for the new year. One source says the dish originated from southern China 1,500 years ago, but most people seem to agree that it actually was invented or at least was made popular as a CNY dish by Chinese immigrants in Singapore or Maylaysia. As far as I know, this is not a CNY tradition in mainland China, but is practiced widely in Maylaysia and Singapore.

Ingredients: finely shredded white daikon radish, carrots, pepper, chopped shallots, crispy fried noodles, roasted sesame seeds, pomelo, cilantro. . .

Just before eating, thinly sliced pieces of raw salmon and plum sauce are added.

Then, everyone gathers at the table, each equipped with a pair of chopsticks.

Let the tossing begin! The higher the tossing the better b/c the act of tossing ("lo hei") symbolizes the gathering of prosperity for the new year. While tossing, people are also to speak 吉祥话 (Jíxiáng Huà), auspicious wishes to each other.

What a fun and very yummy tradition!

The part of China where I'm from, eastern China, we eat dumplings during CNY. I celebrated only but a handful of CNY before coming to the US, but some of my best memories of China was the CNY celebration at my grandparents' home. My grandmother would put a clean coin or red date in several dumplings. Whoever gets a dumpling with the special filling is said to have an auspicious year. This was a big deal for the kids, and we would eat many dumplings in the hope of biting into a coin! Hmm, sounds like "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory."

Other memorable traditions of CNY include wearing new clothes for the day, getting "hong bao" (红包, red envelops with money) from aunts and uncles, and of course, the fire crackers! How I'd love to pass some of these traditions to my kids one day.

Happy Chinese New Year!!

The year of the pig!!

Parents' Holiday Party

The process of preparing food for 17 people is a day-long event, but it was really nice family bonding time (when sparks aren't flying). It brought all four of us together into a small and warm space known as the kitchen. Somehow, conversation flows easily when one is chopping or stirring over a stove.

And guests arrive. Shoreh, a best buddy of mine, is an OB/Gyn resident in Maryland.

Laughter and chatting starts when friends fill the room.

Jac and Jill. Aren't they photogenic?

Friend taking our pic.

Birthday candles are for kids, no matter whose birthday it is! I love to see kids get excited over candles. Imagine, we all had that sense of wonder a long time ago. Benji (with mommy Laurel) is helping my mom and Paul blowing out their candles.

Cake time!

It's always nice to pose for a group photo. From L to R, David, Jac, Jill, Ryan, Paul, Ruth, and Andy.

Christmas Day 2006

Mom, glad she liked her presents.

Matching drinking glasses! Seriously, we really needed these as we only had a collection of mismatched mugs.

"Be Still and Know that I am God" Psalm 46:10

Crabs for dinner!

Paul taking our pic; he also made this Christmas day dinner. That's chicken feet on the left side of the picture. Yummy!

A walk in the park.

Christmas Eve at the Chans'

Good food, good friends = Christmas Eve, 2006.

Having our picture taken by Adrian.

What a lovely Christmas tree.

Another shot, another view. Love the shadows in the background. Not a bad camera, eh?

Our friends and fellow Bible study members, KC and Juei.

My parents playing their first foosball game. Look like they rather enjoyed themselves.

My parents, in their more serious demeanor.
